Muscat: The Urology surgeons of Genitourinary program at Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre (SQCCCRC), succeeded in performing the first operation of its kind in Oman to remove bladder cancer using 3D laparoscopic method (laparoscopic 3D Radical Cystectomy).
The Surgeons performed the laparoscopic surgery by making small incisions in the abdomen where high-quality medical cameras transmit three-dimensional images and precise surgical tools are inserted.
Speedy Recovery
Dr. Hilal Al Rashidi, Consultant Uro-Oncolgist said: “Studies showed that this method provides many advantages for patients, as it reduces blood loss and allows patients to perform surgery through a small incision that speeds recovery. It also reduces the use of analgesia and reduces pain after the operation, which shorten the hospitalization period.”
Dr. Mohammed Mutez, Senior Consultant Urologist explained: “The complication rate in the open cystectomy surgery ranges between 40-65%, with the possibility of blood transfusion being about 66%, while the major complication rates in this new technique range between 10-12% only, and blood loss is much less than before.”
Technically Challenging
Dr. Mohammmed Marzouq, senior consultant Urologist Surgeon, mentioned that despite these advantages, this procedure is technically challenging as it requires a high level of laparoscopy skills and has a longer learning path. However, many studies showed the success of using this method in specialized cancer centers.
The Genitourinary program team at SQCCCRC hopes that this advanced medical procedure will become a treatment option for all patients who have localized muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Noting that bladder cancer ranks fourth among all tumors in men, according to the Cancer Incident in Oman 2019.
