Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman's Environment Authority (EA) has launched a project to protect coral reefs in the Wilayat of Khasab, Musandam Governorate.

The Environment Authority, represented by the Environment Department in the Musandam Governorate, in cooperation with a number of private sector companies, has launched a project to install artificial structures to protect coral reefs in the Wilayat of Khasab in the Musandam Governorate.

The project aims to protect and develop coral reefs in the governorate by making and installing 500 environmental friendly concrete molds at a site previously identified by specialists from the environmental department in the governorate.

The project includes a package of initiatives to be implemented over a period of five years, so 250 concrete molds will be lowered during the current year, and 250 in 2024.

It also includes conducting a field study of the site during the years 2025-2027, in order to follow up the rates of growth and survival of coral reefs on these structures and the extent of success of such projects in protecting and sustaining marine resources.
