Muscat – Oman Sail will take part in this year’s Suhar Festival with a youth sailing Ranking Race where 47 young sailors from Oman Sail’s Sailing Schools will demonstrate their talent while also competing for places in future regional and international regattas. The Rankin Race is organised by Oman Sail under the authority of the Oman Maritime Sports Committee and will take place over the weekend of 29-30 November 2024 at jubilee park in Suhar.
Races will be held in Optimist, ILCA 4 and ILCA 6 categories featuring young male and female sailors, offering an opportunity to gauge progress this season and learn from each other. The highest performing sailors will also be taken into consideration for places in the National Sailing Team places for upcoming competitions.
Ahmed Nasser Al Qasmi, Head Sailing Schools at Oman Sail and Team Leader, said, “We are very pleased to be part of the Suhar Festival and showcasing the sport of sailing among the community and festival visitors. The young sailors at our Sailing Schools are all very talented and committed to becoming the best they can be on and off the water, and this event gives them a chance to show their abilities, improve in a friendly competition and share the experience with the local community.”
Racing will begin at 11am on both days, with an awards ceremony after the final race of the day on 30 November. Prizes are awarded for the top three overall in each category, as well as the top three Optimist Girls and top three Optimist Junior. Each day will feature no more than three races per day for each class.
The Suhar Festival began on 19 November 2024 and will run until 3 January 2025 with a diverse collection of attractions, including theatrical performances, a water park, an electronic games city, sports tournaments, and a heritage village highlighting the region’s Bedouin, agricultural and marine traditions.
