Oman ranks as the most affordable Gulf country

MUSCAT: Oman has solidified its position as the most affordable country in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, according to the 2025 edition of the ‘World Cost of Living Index’ published by Numbeo recently.

The index evaluates various factors, including average rental prices, grocery costs, restaurant prices, and local purchasing power, using New York City as a benchmark with a score of 100 points.

Globally, Oman ranks 93rd out of 139 countries, with a Cost of Living Index of 39.8, making it an attractive destination for residents and expatriates seeking affordability in the region.

In comparison to its GCC neighbours, Oman outshines it as the least expensive option.

Kuwait is ranked 62nd globally with a Cost of Living Index of 40.4 while Saudi Arabia is ranked 56th globally with an index of 41.9.

Qatar is ranked 44th globally with an index of 47.5 while Bahrain is ranked 41st globally with an index of 48.3. The United Arab Emirates is ranked 31st globally with an index of 54.1.

These statistics highlight Oman as the most budget-friendly Gulf nation, while the UAE stands as the most expensive within the region.

Oman is the best in affordability within the Gulf but trails its GCC neighbours globally due to factors like purchasing power and economic positioning.

The report evaluates the cost of living based on factors such as housing, grocery prices, restaurant expenses, and local purchasing power. In Oman, the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in city centers is around US$476, dropping to US$336 in areas outside city centres. Dining out at an inexpensive restaurant costs about US$5.61, while a litre of gasoline is priced at a mere US$0.62.

Oman’s affordability is not only limited to daily expenses but also extends to the purchasing power of its residents. The country boasts a high value-for-money ratio, ensuring that residents enjoy a comfortable standard of living at a fraction of the cost seen in other Gulf countries.

Beyond affordability, Oman is also celebrated for its high quality of life.

A mid-year assessment by Numbeo in 2024 ranked Oman fourth globally for quality of living, ahead of most countries, including its GCC peers. This ranking reflects its safety, low pollution levels, healthcare quality, housing affordability, and favourable climate conditions.

With the lowest cost of living in the GCC and a reputation for excellent quality of life, Oman stands out as a prime destination for those seeking economic and lifestyle benefits in the Gulf region.

Globally, the countries with the lowest cost of living according to the index include Pakistan, Libya, Egypt, India,

Afghanistan, Madagascar, Bangladesh, Russia, and Paraguay.

On the other hand, the ten countries with the highest cost of living are: Switzerland, the US Virgin Islands, Iceland, the Bahamas, Singapore, Hong Kong (China), Barbados, Norway, Papua New Guinea, and Denmark.
