Shaleem and Al Halaniyat Islands: The Environment Authority, represented by the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, released 12 Arabian gazelles as part of a re-settlement project in the Wilayat of Shaleem and Al Halaniyat Islands.
The Arabian gazelle domestication project comes within the authority’s environmental initiatives and programmes that contribute to protecting the environment, preserving its natural resources and domesticating wild creatures in their primary habitats, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
The head of the Arabian Gazelle Domestication Team in the Wilayat of Al Halaniyat Islands, said: “The Directorate conducted a survey in the Wilayat of Al Halaniyat Islands of the plant species and water sources in the area before the release process. After that, the gazelles were transferred from the Arabian Oryx Reserve in the Al Wusta Governorate to the Wildlife Breeding Centre in the Wilayat of Mirbat to ensure that they adapt to the nature and climate of the area and to take care of them in the enclosures for a period of 3 months.
He said that the gazelles were transported by the specialists from the EA in boxes designated for wild animals, and then shipped via the National Ferries Company until they were unloaded in the pens on the Al Halaniyat Islands.
He explained that the process of them into the wild is accompanied by the encirclement and tracking of a number of the herd using devices equipped with GPS and satellite technology, in addition to installing a number of trap cameras in some locations to monitor the movement of the herd and ensure that it remains safe.
