Duqm’s Saay Commercial District roads almost completed

Duqm: The completion rate of the internal roads project in the new Saay Commercial District within the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) rose to 93 percent in April. All core works have been completed, making the area ready for traffic flow.

The new Saay Commercial District is a modern investment and tourism destination within SEZAD. Two years ago, the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) launched a development plan for the district, which includes several model facilities and services. Among them is a 13.65-kilometre internal road network, featuring 4.25 kilometres of dual carriageways with two lanes in each direction, and 9.4 kilometres of single-lane roads in each direction.

The project also includes 10 road connections linking the internal roads to nearby main roads, and 7 signalised intersections. It also features a 12.3 km rainwater drainage network, a 9.1 km sewage network, a 1.5 km rainwater drainage channel, and more than 600 streetlights.

Eng. Abdullah Salim Al Hakamani, Director of the Technical Affairs Department at SEZAD, said the internal road network project in the new Saay Commercial District, with a cost of RO 13.1 million, is part of an ambitious plan aimed at enhancing the quality of life in SEZAD. He noted that the zone’s administration is working on developing the basic infrastructure in the district to make it a model integrated area offering diverse facilities and services, positioning it as a major investment, tourism, and leisure destination in SEZAD.

He explained that Saay Commercial District currently hosts numerous commercial, tourism, sports, and educational establishments, most notably A’soud Global School, the Oman Bowling Centre, Badr Al Samaa Hospital operating 24/7, as well as several hotels, retail shops, and other facilities. Last year, the district saw the opening of a 13,000-square-metre public park, which includes a walking path, playgrounds, green spaces, and many other amenities.

Regarding modern facilities and technologies being introduced in the district, Eng. Al Hakamani stated that the development plan also includes the installation of electric vehicle charging stations, designated spaces with outlets for charging phones and smart devices along walkways and rest areas, as well as dedicated, safe, and smooth pathways for bicycles and e-scooters. All traffic signals in the district will be equipped with smart sensors to enable efficient traffic flow management.

He added that the total number of completed projects in the district stands at 53, with another 24 under construction, a reflection of the significant attention given to the district as a model integrated zone.

Eng. Al Hakamani expects the internal roads network to be fully completed in the second half of this year. The project is anticipated to attract more investments to SEZAD and support its strategy to improve the quality of life in Duqm by providing facilities that meet the aspirations of residents, citizens, and tourists alike.
