Active Participation in the Sports Psychology Course at OOA

On Monday, Oman Olympic Academy (OOA) launched a Sports Psychology course at its headquarters, organized under the umbrella of Oman Olympic Committee (OOC). The course is attended by a number of specialists and stakeholders from various relevant institutions. It comes as part of ongoing efforts to develop and qualify national sports professionals in the psychological and mental aspects of athletic preparation—areas that have become essential components of a comprehensive sports training system.

The course is led by Dr. Ali bin Salam Al-Ya’rubi, Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University. It focuses on enhancing participants' understanding of modern sports psychology and its practical applications. Additionally, it equips them with tools and techniques necessary for psychological preparation to support athletes before, during, and after competitions—ultimately contributing to improved performance and mental stability.

The course covers a wide range of topics related to the psychological dimensions of sports, including motivation building, self-confidence, strategies for managing anxiety and stress, mental imagery skills, focus, and mental resilience under pressure. It also addresses the promotion of sportsmanship, the creation of a positive psychological environment, effective team communication, and leadership styles in sports and their psychological impact on athletes. Furthermore, the course explores the use of modern technology in analyzing athletes’ psychological and behavioral performance.

The primary goal of the course is to empower participants to design comprehensive psychological preparation programs that align with athletes’ needs throughout the sports season. It also aims to provide effective strategies for handling competitive situations, develop communication and motivation skills within sports teams, and incorporate digital tools and applications to support mental performance.

This course is one of the academy’s specialized programs, reflecting OOC commitment to integrating modern scientific concepts into sports practice. It seeks to enhance the quality of psychological preparation in line with the demands of regional and international competitions, contributing to the creation of an integrated sports environment that supports the sustained success of Omani athletes.
