Muscat: Parents are solely responsible for their children’s safety during Eid Al Adha celebrations, Royal Oman Police warned.
The force has also warned against allowing them to play with fireworks.
The Directorate General of Customs at the ROP raised the point that parents should be responsible for their children’s safety.
Eid is a time of celebration in the Islamic faith and some people can get carried away. It is common to see children and teenagers spark the fuse of a firecracker . However, things could go wrong which could cause serious injuries to children and the ROP holds the parent responsible for not monitoring or educating their children about the dangers of fireworks.
In a tweet posted on the DG of Customs Twitter account, they said, “Raising awareness to your child about the dangers of firecrackers and guiding them to other means of entertainment suitable for their age is your responsibility.”
The most common dangers of playing with fireworks, as it was tweeted by the ROP, are injuries to the skin by burning, harming the eyes, hearing loss, child trauma and property damage.
During Eid Al Fitr a child from Nizwa suffered serious injuries as a result of playing with a firecracker and the parents’ failure to monitor the children. The boy lost all his fingers on his left hand apart from the thumb.
It is worth mentioning that the DG of Customs is stepping up measures to prevent smuggling of fireworks through Omani borders and as a result they have foiled several attempts successfully in a bid for a child-friendly Eid celebration.
