Heatwave: Experts share tips on air conditioners' cooling

Muscat: As temperatures continue to hover around 45°C in several parts of Oman, experts are urging people to service their air conditioners and carry out basic maintenance to ensure efficient cooling during the peak summer months.

Al Rustaq recorded the highest temperature in Oman over the past 24 hours, with the mercury soaring to 46.7°C on Saturday, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The latest weather data, released on Saturday, showed several other parts of the Sultanate also experienced extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 45°C.

Al Amerat recorded 45.9°C, followed by Bidbid at 45.7°C, Al Awabi at 45.5°C, and Wadi Al Maawil and Sunaynah, both at 45.4°C.

Bushar and Nakhal each registered 45.2°C, while Buraimi reached 44.9°C, Hamra Ad Duru recorded 44.8°C, and Samail reported 44.5°C.

Technicians and air conditioned maintenance experts say simple measures such as cleaning or replacing air filters, keeping windows shaded with curtains or blinds, clearing air vents of obstructions and washing the outdoor condenser unit can significantly improve an air conditioner’s performance in Oman.

They also recommend switching on AC units early in the morning before the day’s heat builds up, reducing the workload on the system. The advice comes as many residents report air conditioners running without adequately cooling their homes.

According to maintenance experts, the problem is often caused by clogged filters, dirty condenser or evaporator coils, low refrigerant levels, faulty thermostats or low voltage supply. Experts recommend first checking for blocked airflow and ensuring the outdoor fan is operating properly.

“If ice has formed on the evaporator coil, running the unit in fan mode for a short period may help thaw it.

“However, if cooling does not improve after these basic checks, homeowners should contact a qualified technician, as compressor and refrigerant-related faults require professional repair,” Sunil Kumar, a technician in Ruwi said.

With Oman expected to experience prolonged periods of extreme heat, technicians say regular preventive maintenance is the most effective way to keep air conditioning systems operating efficiently.
