MUSCAT: Spain's Ambassador to Oman, His Excellency F. Javier de Istúriz, has expressed delight after Spain secured a place in the FIFA World Cup final, describing the achievement as a reward for the country's passionate supporters and a testament to the strength of Spanish football.
Reacting to Spain's 2-0 semifinal victory over France, Ambassador de Istúriz praised both teams and acknowledged the quality of the opposition.
"Yesterday was a good match. We played against a very strong team with very talented players and were fortunate to win," he told Times of Oman.
"We have made it to the final, which is a tremendous gift to Spain's wonderful fans and a testimony to the high level of football in Spain."
Looking ahead to the final, the ambassador said he hoped the best team would emerge victorious. "And now, may the best team win," he added.
He also had a special message for Spanish supporters living in Oman, expressing hope that they would cherish the moment and celebrate together if Spain captures the coveted trophy.
"As for the Spanish fans in Oman, I hope they will enjoy this beautiful moment and that we have the occasion to celebrate a victory together," Ambassador de Istúriz said.
The victory sparked scenes of celebration across Spain, with fans gathering in city squares, cafés and homes to celebrate La Roja's return to the World Cup final after 16 years. Many supporters described the win as an emotional moment reminiscent of Spain's golden era.
One jubilant supporter summed up the national mood by saying in Oman, "It feels like 2010 all over again. This team has made us believe that another World Cup is possible."
Another fan said, "France are one of the strongest teams in the world, but Spain showed incredible discipline and character. We couldn't be prouder."
A third supporter added, "The whole country is behind this team. We're just one match away from making history again, and everyone believes this group can do it."
Spain reached the final with a disciplined display against France, neutralising one of international football's most dangerous attacks to keep Kylian Mbappé and his teammates scoreless.
The victory sends Spain into their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 2010.
Celebrations continued late into the night, with jubilant supporters recreating Norway's popular "Viking Row" celebration that became one of the defining images of the tournament, as Spain moved within one victory of football's biggest prize.
Spain will now bid to crown an impressive campaign with a record-extending FIFA World Cup title when they face the winner of the second semifinal between England and Argentina.
