Muscat: The Environment Authority in Dhofar Governorate is implementing a large-scale environmental campaign to plant 4 million seeds of native trees in the governorate's mountains. This initiative is part of its ongoing efforts to develop vegetation cover, combat desertification, enhance biodiversity, and restore natural ecosystems.
The campaign is taking place from July 20th to 30th, in cooperation with Dhofar Municipality and the "Awareness" initiative team, with active participation from members of the local community. It covers the Wilayats of Mirbat, Taqah, Salalah, Rakhyut, and Dhalkut.
Hatem bin Salem Al Mahri, Director of the Vegetation Development Department at the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, stated that this is the fifth consecutive year for the campaign.
He noted that choosing the Dhofar Khareef season provides optimal conditions for germination and early growth, thanks to the abundant rainfall and dense fog, which contribute to increasing the chances of seed germination and growth during their early stages.
Al Mahri explained that the season's humidity helps seedlings develop a strong root system, enabling them to withstand subsequent periods of drought.
He added that trees also play a role in stabilizing the soil, reducing erosion, and maintaining its fertility, thus supporting the sustainability of vegetation cover.
Al Mahri further stated that the campaign aims to plant several native species contributing to the restoration of natural habitats, enhancing plant diversity, and providing food sources and suitable environments for various living organisms.
He noted that the participation of government institutions, volunteers, and community members in implementing the campaign reflects the importance of community partnership in protecting the environment, preserving natural resources, and supporting national efforts aimed at achieving environmental sustainability.
