India making efforts for ending Ukraine war as Zelensky hails peace plan

India is making efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said, as both Moscow and Kyiv welcomed New Delhi’s proposals for reducing hostilities.

Jaishankar said India had held talks with Russia and Ukraine on practical steps, including protecting shipping in the Black Sea, safeguarding grain and energy exports, and exploring possible “non-attack” arrangements.

India has maintained a neutral position on the war while calling for an end to the fighting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to pursue peace, most recently during their meeting in August.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv was considering four ceasefire proposals from India, Turkey, Egypt and the United States, describing India’s plan as the “most comprehensive”.

Ukraine has said it is open to a combined truce covering the Black Sea and energy infrastructure, but insists both elements must be implemented together.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked India for its efforts, while Putin praised Modi’s “very good ideas” aimed at finding a peaceful and mutually acceptable solution.

India has also been directly affected by the conflict. At least five Indian seafarers have been killed in attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea, prompting strong protests from New Delhi.

Meanwhile, India faces pressure from the United States to reduce its purchases of discounted Russian crude, with Washington threatening tariffs of up to 100 per cent.
