Muscat: It is expected that the number of Omani elders will increase to 10 per cent of the total population by mid-2040.
They constituted 6 per cent of the total Omani population in mid-2015.
55 per cent of the elderly live in the three governorates of Oman, namely Muscat, North Al Batinah and A’Dakhiliyah. The elderly male percentage, compared to the female percentage, is 96 to 100.
The figures reflect a notable community participation for the elderly, as “the Reality of the Elderly,” bulletin issued by the centre show that about 6 out of every 10 elderly donated to charitable work and that a quarter of the elderly did volunteer work.
77 per cent of the Omani elderly exercised and that the male elderly exercised more than female (64 per cent to 36 per cent).
The largest percentage of the beneficiaries of the social security pension are the elderly, numbering 33.277 cases, forming 39 per cent of the total number of cases and they got 40.3 of the total disbursements.
Regarding work of the Omani elderly, the statistics showed that males make up 91 per cent of the total number of Omani elders. 2,645 of them work in the private sector, including 2,415 males and 230 females, forming 1.5 per cent and 0.5 per cent of the total workers in the private sector.
