Oman dining: Get hooked at Fish Hoek

When I first visited the newly opened Oasis Mall in Al Khuwair my eyes fell on a teaser advertisement of an opening of a restaurant and it sparked my curiosity. I was wondering if it had something to do with fish and my wild guess came true when I walked into Fish Hoek, the brand new restaurant, on my next visit. If you love fresh hot seafood this is the place to be. We started with flavoursome fish cake which is very similar to a croquette or pakora, made of fish and potato patty and served with a dip. We also had prawn pops and calamari rings which was crisp but best eaten when hot or they tend to get an elastic texture. Grilled calamari tubes (squids) which was stuffed with fish was very interesting to look and delicious too. We had these with mashed potatoes and traditional gravy along with garlic and chilli mayo sauces. To quench our thirst we tried the lemon mint which was very refreshing. At Fish Hoek there is quite a variety to choose from sides, salads, gravy, wraps, burger, combo meals, kids meals, drinks, and desserts. Moreover you have options of having baked, grilled or fried. From their signature dishes we tried magic sea bass which was delicious and the meat was soft and succulent. It was cooked to perfection and was served with yellow rice cooked in a special broth. Grilled salmon with vegetables and mashed potatoes is a must try. The skin on the salmon was nice and crunchy that added to the taste. The fish was very moist. Louisiana fried prawns and Louisiana sea bass were fried in a very crispy batter and served with chips and sauces. The fish (hamour) and chips with tartar sauce are served in three different portions. Most of the above come with a soft drink, chips, and dips. The fish was soft and the batter was crisp and delicious. The chips are crisp on the outside and soft inside. We ended our meal with panna cotta with strawberry sauce. What really caught my attention was their buzzer service. In a radius of 1km the buzzer rings indicating that your food is ready and hence you don’t need to wait. Open from 11am-11pm from Monday to Thursday and 11am –midnight on the weekends, Fish Hoek, the latest seafood attraction in town is certainly a must visit.
