Muscat: The Shana coast, in Mahut state at Al Wusta Governorate, is known for its salt lakes where workers collect natural salt in bags for sale.
The area of the salt lake is about 3 sqkm, and about 50 bags (500 kg) are produced daily.
Salt lakes form when sea water flows into the lake, containing salt and minerals, and then cannot leave. The water then evaporates, leaving behind the dissolved salts and thus increasing its salinity, which makes the salt lake an excellent place for salt production.
