Law and order to be dealt with meticulously: Mehbooba

Jammu: In the backdrop of ongoing violence in the Indian-administered-Kashmir, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday asked the civil and police administration to deal with law and order meticulously so that the promise of delivering good governance to the people is implemented on the ground.
Mehbooba, who took over as chief minister just 12 days back, said the government has been confronted with new challenges on the law and order front and expressed confidence of overcoming these and focus entirely on ushering in a new era of development in the state.
"We are holding this meeting in the backdrop of certain unfortunate incidents in the Kashmir valley," she said at a meeting here with Deputy Commissioners (DC) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Jammu region.
During the two-hour-long meeting, Mehbooba asked the police to remain vigilant and not allow the situation to drift so that they lose focus of their real agenda of bringing peace and development in the state. She asked the officers to cut the grass under their feet and simplify government procedures so as to enable people to avail services in a time-bound manner.
"Charity begins at home. I have compiled a list of my relatives who are government employees that I will be sending to GAD (General Administration) soon. I hope the officers will deal with them as they do with other employees," she said.
Drawing a clear line of distinction between the issues confronting administration in Kashmir and Jammu regions, the chief minister said the officers have to fulfil their obligations to ensure that systems work properly in reaching the grassroots with their proactive participation.
"Redressal of public grievances must be the focal point. In case of emergencies, DCs and SSPs should be the first to reach the troubled spot. They should not let things come to a pass where they get out of control," she said.
Meanwhile, as tension prevailed in the Valley on the fourth day, Mehbooba on Saturday sought to douse the flames by visiting families of those killed since Tuesday in firing by security forces and assured
them of justice amid her assertion that such incidents are "unacceptable".
Mehbooba reached out to the families of the victims in the hour of grief even as curfew-like restrictions continued in certain parts of Kashmir and mobile Internet services were snapped throughout the Valley.
