Experts to discuss efficient utilisation of resources at Sohar symposium in Oman

Muscat: A two-day national level symposium on “Efficient Utilisation of Resources and its Economic Impacts” will be hosted by College of Applied Sciences (CAS)-Sohar on April 26 and 27.
The EUREI’16 symposium will provide a platform for experts from various fields of engineering to discuss different aspects of the efficient utilisation of resources and its economic impact among various stakeholders of the national economy by analysing the current scenario for further development of the country.
Many participants from across the country will attend the symposium to present their views.
The dramatic fall in crude oil prices since mid-2014 is having a significant impact on the world and national economy, especially for those reliant on oil inputs. This will enhance a further loss of investment, unemployment and cut public spending.
The impact of the crisis is not limited to those directly employed in the oil industry, but also increases the pressure to diversify the national economy to become less dependent on oil.
Many countries are developing a dedicated resource efficiency policy outlined as a response to the anticipated utilisation of resources. The resource efficiency concept has to be implemented at a national level with a focus on raising the efficiency of use of material resources.
The impact of the decreasing crude oil price on the environment, economic development must be decoupled from the amount of resources we consume. The efficient utilisation of the resource programme focuses on reducing the adverse environmental and economic impact of producing, processing and using goods and services and also meeting human needs and enlightening well-being.
The symposium aims to attract participants with different backgrounds and experience, to promote cross-pollination between the different fields of Engineering and Science, Information Technology and Business Management, and hence render and converse pioneering theories, frameworks, methodologies, tools and applications.
The two-day symposium will see keynote speakers delivering their expert talk, paving the way for rigorous discussion. Many scientific papers will be presented during the various parallel sessions, which will cover themes, such as technology harnessing, case studies on resource management, the social and economic aspect of the present scenario, which can leads towards sustainability.
Along with experts from academia and industry, students will get a chance to participate in this symposium too. A competition for suggesting an innovative idea to build the nation through the efficient utilisation of resources will be conducted. The best entry by the students will be selected by conducting two competitions. One will be based on the theme, “Waste to Energy,” while the other competition will be based on the final year technical project.
The ideas and suggestions churned out from this symposium will be compiled as recommendations and will be forward to the concern authorities and policy makers.
CAS-Sohar is one of the colleges under the Ministry of Higher Education. It has become one of the premier institutes to offer Bachelor’s Degree courses in the fields of Engineering and Information Technology (IT).
Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical are the specialisations offered in the Engineering programme, while IT offers specialisations in Computer Networks, Data Management, Software Development and IT Security.
This symposium, which will be hosted by the Engineering Department, is sponsored by Al Jarwani hospitality, the Sohar Port, Al Diwaniya Sweets and the Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA).
