Oman’s Consumer Protection Authority Chairman undertakes inspection

Muscat: The Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority has made an inspection tour to a number of centres and shops in Muscat Governorate.

A statement issued online by Consumer Protection Authority (CPA), said: “His Excellency Sulayem bin Ali Al Hikmani, Chairman of Consumer Protection Authority undertook an inspection of a number of centres and shops in Muscat this morning to find out the availability of goods and prices and to ensure their stability and the suppliers ’commitment to the laws and decisions issued by the authority before the start of Ramadan as well as the application of value-added tax. He also inaugurated the Ramadan basket initiative, which the authority used to implement annually in cooperation with some centres and shops in the various governorates of the Sultanate.”

Al Hakmani explained that the authority has prepared a clear action plan to discourage overpricing at all the markets of the Sultanate based on the existence of a database of commodity prices, especially those that are not taxed, and the formation of field work teams to inspect shops and commercial centres. Any violation recorded will be dealt with according to the applicable legal procedures.

The Chairman also stressed on the obligation of traders to display prices and offers on products in a clear manner that makes it easier for the consumer to view them.

The Ramadan basket initiative aims to provide weekly essential goods for a family by collecting them in one integrated food basket, the price of which does not exceed 10 Omani riyals in total and includes 19 different commodities that meet the requirements of the family in terms of diversity and quality.
