Muscat: Two Oman national cricketers Zeeshan Maqsood and Munis Ansari have earned a chance to play in United Kingdom for the next three months.
After a fairly successful stint in Jersey, where the Oman national cricket team earned promotion to World Cricket League Division 4 (WCL Div 4), Oman opener Zeeshan Maqsood and ‘slinger’ Munis Ansari won themselves a chance to have a taste of the game in county arena, thanks to the efforts of Oman Cricket. Also in the pipeline is Rajesh Ranpura.
During the Division 5 tournament in Jersey, Zeeshan had scored a swashbuckling century and Munis and Ranpura had impressed all with threatening bowling spells.
Zeeshan and Munis have already impressed with their spectacular shows in domestic tournaments of Brimingham (North Staffs and South Cheshire Division 2 League) and Nottinghamshire.
Pakistan-born Zeeshan, who struck headlines with a spectacular catch during the World T20 opener against Ireland, is making most of the opportunity in Birmingham.
Playing for Weston CC (Cheshire), Zeeshan has already appeared in two matches and for a change he excelled with the ball by taking a five-wicket haul.
In a 60-over match, Zeeshan was instrumental in helping Weston beat Crewe CC. Zeeshan, who couldn’t score as an opener, used his slow left-arm tweakers to rattle the opponents by claiming five wickets for 41 runs, his 24 overs boasting of 12 maidens.
Later they had lost a close T20 match against Checkley CC. Zeeshan had struck a six and four in his 10-run stint as No. 3 batsman and conceded only 17 runs off his four overs with a scalp to record.
Vinu Mathew, manager of Assarain Cricket Team, has informed that Zeeshan has been given approval to play in the UK League.
Meanwhile, Munis Ansari is playing in the domestic league in Nottingham and his first stint saw him claiming three scalps.
Munis, a Madhya Pradesh born cricketer, hopes to hone his slingers before the WCL Division 4 later this year in USA.
Wilson Burboj, manager of Muscat CT, the team Munis represents in Oman Cricket League, said this was a proud moment for Oman Cricket.
“With such exposure available for Oman cricketers and more to come, the future is certainly going to be bright. With opportunities coming more players will be attracted to play the game in Oman,” said Wilson.
Only few days ago, Times Sport had announced the news of Oman’s top batsman Jatinder Singh making debut in the Irish Cricket League.
Jatinder will be representing Cork County in the First Division Irish Cricket League.
In an exchange programme, Jatinder will also be fulfilling coaching and cricket development commitments in Ireland. The stint in Ireland is from June 1 to September 15. Incidentally, Jatinder Singh also plays for Muscat CT.
