Muscat: A group of expatriate workers was arrested for manufacturing used furniture from wood waste and old and worn out sponges on a farm in South Al Batinah Governorate.

The Consumer Protection Department in Barka arrested the workers for manufacturing used furniture on a farm in the Wilayat of Barka, in an environment that is not suitable for manufacturing furniture, as part of the monitoring and inspection efforts carried out by the Markets Regulation and Control Department.

The details of the seizure are summarised in the administration receiving a communication from a consumer. The communication gave information regarding an expatriate worker who manufactures used furniture from wood and sponge waste at a farm in Barka. After verifying the authenticity of the communication, it was found that the workers were practicing the activity without obtaining a license from the competent authorities.

They also used remnants of damaged wood, worn-out fabrics, and old sponges in the manufacture, and sold it to the consumer as if it was manufactured from new materials.

By asking the violators, they admitted the violations attributed to them.

Accordingly, the furniture was checked, and legal measures were taken in this regard, as these practices violate the provisions of Article (7) of the Consumer Protection Law, which states: “It is prohibited to trade in any adulterated, corrupt, imitated, or unauthorised commodity, circulation, and it is prohibited to advertise it.

The authority affirms that it will spare no effort in following up and monitoring the markets and controlling everything that would harm the health and safety of consumers or detract from their rights, and taking legal measures against violators.

It also appeals to consumers to report any violations they may notice in the markets through the various communication channels of the authority.
