Muscat: The Al Hajar Mountains range, home to iconic peaks like Jabal Al Akhdar and Jabal Shams, has become the top destination for citizens and residents seeking a cool holiday retreat.
With a holiday declared on January 12, Sunday, to mark His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s Accession Day, many are planning trips to these picturesque locations, making the most of the long weekend starting on January 10, Friday.
Jabal Shams, renowned as the highest peak in Oman, recorded the lowest temperature in the Sultanate on Tuesday at a chilling 2 degrees Celsius.
Saiq station in South Al Sharqiyah followed closely with 9 degrees Celsius, while Jabal Samhan in Dhofar Governorate registered 7 degrees Celsius.
Although snowfall eluded the peaks this year, the crisp, cold air and scenic landscapes are more than enough to draw crowds.
“Oman’s mountain ranges captivate with a breathtaking variety that appeals to both nature lovers and adventurers alike,” said James Reeves, General Manager of Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa.
The recently opened and the latest addition to the Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio of IHG in the region, Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar, perched 2,000 metres above sea level on the “Green Mountains,” has quickly gained a reputation as a premier destination for mountain getaways.
“The rugged peaks and deep gorges of Jebel Shams and the lush terraces of Jebel Akhdar offer unforgettable experiences,” added Reeves.
Anoop Joseph, Director of Sales & Marketing at the resort, noted the surge in interest: “Long weekends in Oman always invigorate domestic tourism. We have already been receiving a lot of inquiries for the coming days.”
The allure of Jabal Akhdar lies not only in its cooler temperatures but also in its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Terraced farms, ancient villages, and breathtaking mountain views offer a peaceful escape from the bustle of daily life.
“The region has so much natural beauty, cultural richness, and untold stories,” said Reeves. “I am excited for our guests to discover this special neighbourhood — from exploring ancient villages to enjoying the cool tranquility of the mountain air and indulging in rejuvenating wellness treatments. Every stay will be a curated collection of unforgettable moments and bucket-list experiences.”
As the festive season coincides with the holiday, Reeves emphasised the unique charm of the mountain setting. “At 2,000 metres above sea level, where stars twinkle a little brighter and holiday magic arrives just a touch earlier, the experience is truly magical.”
Oman’s mountainous regions have always been a favourite among locals and tourists during colder months.
With the holiday providing an extended break, many families and groups are expected to head to the highlands. Adventure enthusiasts look forward to activities like hiking, stargazing, and exploring the rugged terrain, while others seek relaxation amidst the serene surroundings.
Whether it’s the dramatic cliffs of Jabal Shams or the verdant terraces of Jabal Akhdar, these natural wonders remain a testament to Oman’s diverse landscape, promising a memorable holiday experience for all.
As Reeves aptly summarised, “Every visit to the mountains is an opportunity to create unforgettable memories. This Accession Day holiday and the upcoming long weekend are no exception.”
With clean and clear air and uninterrupted views of mountains with clear sky for stargazing, Oman’s Al Hajar range stands ready to welcome throngs of visitors seeking an extraordinary winter escape.
