MUSCAT: His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, on Sunday inaugurated the 10th Sports Tournament of GCC Universities and Higher Education Institutions at Sultan Qaboos University's Cultural Centre.
The tournament has brought together participants from several universities across the GCC nations who would compete in athletics, swimming, football, three-a-side basketball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis. The events are hosted across venues, including Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Seeb Sports Stadium and the Military Technical College.
The tournament themed "Our Gulf, Our Legacy," aims to strengthen fraternal ties among university students across the GCC and to foster sports and cultural cooperation.
Dr. Raya bint Salem Al Mandhari, Dean of Student Affairs at Sultan Qaboos University and Head of the 10th Sports Tournament, emphasised the significance of the event. She highlighted that the tournament focuses on enhancing the spirit of belonging and deepening national sentiment among students from GCC countries. Additionally, it aims to empower students athletically to represent their educational institutions and countries effectively, while promoting the exchange of experiences and strengthening fraternal bonds.
The opening ceremony featured a variety of performances, including traditional folk arts and a Gulf music medley. Participating teams made their entrance, followed by the screening of a short film titled "Our Gulf, Our Legacy," encapsulating the tournament's theme.
