Muscat: Oman Athletes Committee held its Ordinary Electoral General Assembly on Sunday at Intercity Hotel – Muscat, in the presence of 17 members of the General Assembly, members of the Election Committee, members of Oman Athletes Committee, and candidates for the upcoming term.
At the beginning of the meeting, Asaad Mubarak Al-Hasni, Chairman of Oman Athletes Committee, delivered a speech welcoming the attendees. He highlighted that the committee was established based on the recommendations of International Olympic Committee (IOC) and in line with the Basic Principles of Good Governance for the Olympic and Sports Movement. One of the committee's key roles is to represent Omani athletes within Olympic entities and coordinate efforts to uphold the Athletes’ Rights and Responsibilities Charter.
Al-Hasni further stated that since its establishment, the committee has worked on drafting an independent and comprehensive regulation, which has been approved by Oman Olympic Committee (OOC). In collaboration with the executive administration, the committee has also focused on activating athletes committees within various sports federations and committees, achieving notable success. He expressed hope that these committees would effectively fulfill their roles, carry out their responsibilities, and meet the aspirations of athletes in Oman.
In his speech, Al-Hasni said:
"Today, we stand at the threshold of a new phase of work and development. I wish the new committee all the best in facing upcoming challenges. We all recognize the pressing issues that require urgent attention, such as protecting athletes' rights and ensuring a safe sports environment."
He added:
"The fight against doping is one of our top priorities. Protecting athletes' health and safety is a shared responsibility, and we must work together to ensure that their sports careers remain free from risks that could impact their lives and future."
At the conclusion of his speech, the Chairman of Oman Athletes Committee expressed his gratitude to the committee members for their dedication and efforts. He also extended his appreciation to OOC Board of Directors, its General Secretariat, and its Executive Administration for their continuous support. He wished success to all members of the committee for the 2024–2028 term.
Following the speech, the election event took place to select representatives of Oman Athletes Committee for the 2024–2028 term. Six members were elected from a pool of nine candidates:
- Salih Nasser Al-Saadi – 16 votes
- Sultan Hamoud Al-Touqi–15 votes
- Buthaina Eid Al-Yaqubi–14 votes
- Mohammed Naseeb Al-Habsi–14 votes
- Wafa Saif Al-Samariya–14 votes
- Khalifa Hamad Al-Jabri–12 votes
Additionally, the General Assembly elected Fatma Talib Al-Nabhani and Salih Nasser Al-Saadi as athlete representatives in OOC General Assembly for the 2024–2028 electoral cycle. Al-Nabhani received 14 votes while Al-Saadi secured 12 votes
Furthermore, the General Assembly appointed Khalifa Hamad Al-Jabri as OOC Board Member representing the athletes for the 2024–2028 electoral term.
