MUSCAT: Oman is set to complete its longest dual carriageway — linking Adam to Thumrait — within 36 months, following the signing of three major agreements worth over OMR 258 million on Tuesday.
The new 400-km stretch will close the final gap in the Sultan Said bin Taimour Road (Adam-Haima-Thumrait), creating a continuous link between Muscat and Dhofar.
The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology signed the agreements to implement the third, fourth, and fifth sections of the project, which is expected to boost road safety, reduce travel time, and stimulate economic and tourism growth across central and southern Oman.
The agreements were signed by Eng. Said Hamoud Al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, who said that “the completion of the project would enhance connectivity between the north and south of the country, while opening new opportunities for development and investment.”
The first agreement was signed with an Omani-Saudi consortium comprising Al Sarooj Construction Company (Oman) and Rawaf Contracting Company (Saudi Arabia) to build a 132.5km dual carriageway within 36 months.
The second agreement, also for 36 months, covers a 135km dual carriageway stretch and was signed with a consortium of Galfar Engineering & Contracting (Oman) and Al-Omair Trading & Contracting (Saudi Arabia).
The third contract was awarded to Gulf Oman Company (Oman) and Koom Al Fahd Trading, Industry & Contracting (Saudi Arabia) for another 132.5km dual carriageway section, also to be completed in 36 months.
These three segments build on the already dualised 317km stretch from Adam to Haima. Once complete, the entire route will form Oman’s longest dual carriageway, improving traffic flow, logistics connectivity, and safety, while enhancing regional mobility and supporting tourism and economic diversification.
The signing ceremony was attended by Sultan Salim Al Habsi, Minister of Finance; Eng. Badr Salim Al Mamari, Secretary-General of the Tender Board; Sheikh Ahmed Musalam Al Kathiri, Governor of Al Wusta; Eng. Khamis Mohammed Al Shammakhi, Undersecretary for Transport; Ahmed Hamad Al Maawali, Wali of Thumrait; senior ministry officials; and representatives from the Saudi Fund for Development.
