Oman Botanic Garden officially handed over to Muscat Municipality

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has officially handed over the Oman Botanic Garden project to Muscat Municipality, marking a significant milestone for one of the region’s largest and most distinctive botanical gardens. The project stands out for its vast scale, ecological diversity, and integration of educational and tourism functions.

Commenting on the occasion, Salim Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, said: “After years of continuous work, the ministry has completed this project, which has now been handed over to Muscat Municipality. We wish them success in utilizing it as a catalyst for various service and productive sectors. Our sincere appreciation goes to everyone who contributed to this achievement, as we move forward with other projects that will strengthen the tourism sector.”

The Oman Botanic Garden is a world-class initiative celebrating the Sultanate’s rich plant life, landscapes, and cultural heritage. Located in the village of Al Khoudh, approximately 20 kilometres from Muscat International Airport and near Sultan Qaboos University, the garden spans 430 hectares and is set within the northern mountains of Oman.

Designed to showcase the full diversity of native Omani flora, the garden features meticulously recreated natural habitats, ranging from arid sand deserts to monsoon cloud forests. It also highlights traditional agricultural practices and the many uses of plants in Omani daily life, offering visitors a comprehensive educational and cultural experience.

The project is expected to become a major centre for environmental education, scientific research, and eco-tourism, further reinforcing Oman’s commitment to sustainability and heritage preservation.
