Muscat: The Ministry of Health has released a detailed clarification outlining the official steps for undergoing a pre-marital medical examination, aimed at individuals planning to get married. This initiative emphasises the importance of health awareness and informed decision-making before marriage._
According to the Ministry, the process begins by visiting an approved public or private healthcare institution within the Sultanate. The attending physician reviews the medical history of both individuals, including chronic and hereditary conditions, and conducts a general health checkup such as blood pressure measurement.
The examination includes blood tests, screenings for sexually transmitted infections, and other necessary medical evaluations. Based on the results, the physician provides appropriate health counseling, explains available options, and addresses any questions. Genetic and psychological guidance may also be offered.
If treatment is required, it will be provided or referred to specialists. Upon completion of all tests and counseling, the healthcare institution issues an official pre-marital medical certificate for both parties. A digital copy of this certificate is then sent to the relevant notary office to proceed with the marriage contract, pending mutual consent.
The certificate remains valid for three months from the date of examination.
The Ministry stressed that the pre-marital medical exam is not merely a mandatory procedure, but a proactive step toward ensuring a healthier and more stable life for both partners.
