Golf in Oman swings into a new era with youth at the forefront

MUSCAT: Golf in Oman is quietly but steadily building momentum, driven by a focused strategy on youth development and competitive exposure. From grassroots training programmes to medal-winning performances at Gulf championships, the sport is carving out a stronger presence on the regional stage.

This upward trajectory reflects the sustained efforts of the Oman Golf Association (OGA) to widen participation, raise technical standards, and prepare national players to compete at higher levels. In recent months, Omani golfers across multiple age groups have delivered impressive results in GCC tournaments, securing medals in both team and individual categories and underlining the sport’s growing maturity within the Sultanate.

Speaking to Oman News Agency, Faiz Mohammed Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the Oman Golf Association (OGA), said “that nurturing young talent remains central to the association’s long-term vision for the sport.”

“The association places a high priority on junior development programmes by organising regular training camps and facilitating player participation in overseas tournaments to gain competitive experience. This is complemented by hosting regional championships that provide opportunities for direct competition with diverse playing styles.”

Faiz Mohammed Riaz emphasised that the availability of modern infrastructure has significantly strengthened Oman’s ability to train golfers consistently throughout the year.

“Modern facilities, including accredited golf courses and indoor training centres, have also played a key role in establishing an ideal year-round training environment.”

He explained that Omani players have demonstrated growing competitiveness in Gulf tournaments across multiple age categories, achieving positive outcomes that have reinforced the confidence of technical staff in their ability to represent the Sultanate in upcoming regional and continental competitions.

Faiz Mohammed Riaz also highlighted a steady increase in girls’ participation in tournaments, reflecting strategic plans to broaden women’s involvement in the game of golf and identify promising young talent among girls.

From the players’ perspective, recent podium finishes are viewed as tangible proof that the development framework is producing results. Taimur Ghalib Al Busaidi, a member of the national junior team, said the medals secured by Omani age-group teams underline the scale of work being invested in national talent development.

“The advanced placements and medals earned by the age-group teams in recent periods reflect the substantial efforts underway to develop national talent.”

He noted that winning gold, silver and bronze medals at Gulf championships demonstrate the advanced technical level achieved by young players in Oman, as well as across the wider Gulf region.

Taimur pointed to the strong showing of the Oman Under-13 team at the Gulf Championship for Girls and Age Groups in Muscat as a significant milestone for the sport.

“The achievement of Oman U13 team in securing top positions at the Gulf Championship for Girls and Age Groups represents a major milestone in the development of golf in Oman,” he said, adding that the success “reflects regional confidence in the organisational and technical capacities of Oman Golf Association.”

For the youngest member of the national setup, the upward trend in results has become a powerful motivator to pursue further improvement.

Yusuf Azzan Al Rumhi, 12, the youngest member of the national junior squad, said the rising standards achieved by Oman’s teams in regional tournaments continue to inspire players to push their limits.

He highlighted his own recent achievements as a defining moment in his development.

“My accomplishment of winning a gold medal in the individual category, alongside the U-13 national team’s silver medal in the GCC Golf Championship for Girls and Age Groups, provides strong motivation to persist in delivering high-level performances.”

Yusuf affirmed that the focus for young golfers remains on sustained growth rather than short-term success.

“The objective remains continuous development and building a successful career in golf.”

As Oman continues to invest in structured junior pathways, modern facilities and regular regional competition, the steady progress of its young golfers suggests the Sultanate is laying firm foundations for a more competitive and inclusive future in the sport - one shaped increasingly by home-grown talent and long-term vision.
