Oman strengthens space sector with new observatory and ground station project

Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) and the Environment Authority (EA) have signed a cooperation programme with Astronomical Technology Trading Company. The agreement aims to implement a project for hosting astronomical observatories and ground stations at the Al Hajar Al Gharbi Starlight Reserve in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. This initiative is part of a technological sandbox designed to support scientific research and the growth of the space sector in Oman.

The project will focus on establishing advanced observatories and ground stations for satellite communications and tracking. By using the reserve’s clear skies and low light pollution, the initiative will provide an ideal environment for space science experiments. This collaboration aligns with the Omani Space Sector Policy (2023–2033) and supports the National Digital Economy Programme by fostering innovation and attracting technology investments.

Under the programme, the Environment Authority will manage the site and ensure environmental sustainability, while the MTCIT will oversee technical aspects and infrastructure. Astronomical Technology Trading Company will be responsible for designing and operating the facilities to international standards. This project is expected to enhance Oman's global standing as a hub for space observation while promoting sustainable scientific ecotourism.
