Dams in North Al Sharqiyah exceed capacity as heavy rains boost water storage

Ibra– Groundwater recharge and surface storage dams across the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate have recorded significant inflows following recent heavy rainfall, with total stored المياه exceeding 6 million cubic meters.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources confirmed that several dams surpassed 75 percent of their storage capacity, prompting the controlled opening of discharge gates to enhance groundwater recharge and accommodate additional inflows.

Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Ali Al-Mashikhi, Director General of Agricultural and Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources in the governorate, said that the period from March 20 to 27 witnessed intense rainfall across the region, leading to the flow of wadis and substantial accumulation of water in dams.

He noted that the governorate is home to 10 dams with a combined storage capacity exceeding 6 million cubic meters, many of which have benefited significantly from the recent weather conditions.

Among the most prominent dams affected were Al-Aqida, Wadi Nam and Al-Rassa in Al Qabil, Wadi Qafifa in Ibra, Al-Wariya in Al Mudhaibi, and Wadi Al-Uyun in Sinaw.

According to the latest rainfall statistics, Ibra recorded the highest precipitation at 318 mm, followed by Al Mudhaibi with 225 mm, Dima Wa Al Taiyyin with 220 mm, and Al Qabil with 218 mm. Other recorded levels included 150 mm in Bidiya, 145 mm in Wadi Bani Khalid, and 111 mm in Sinaw.

The ministry emphasized that the managed release of water will help maximize groundwater recharge while ensuring dam safety amid continued weather fluctuations.
