Launch of the 17th UTAS Rovers Camping at Al Sawadi Resort Under the Theme “Seifa… Towards Sustainable Shores”

The 17th Rovers Camping of the University of Technology and Applied Sciences
(UTAS) has officially commenced at Al Sawadi Beach Resort, organized by the Rustaq
College of Education from 1 to 4 May 2026, under the theme “Seifa… Towards Sustainable Shores.” The event brings together more than 60 female rangers, along with leaders and supervisors representing various UTAS branches, within an integrated program that combines training, practical application, and field engagement.

The theme reflects Oman’s environmental identity, as “Seifa” refers to the coastal strip, symbolizing the deep connection between people and the sea. It also highlights the participants’ focus on protecting coastal environments and promoting sustainability through practical initiatives aimed at preserving marine resources and addressing environmental challenges.

This annual rovers camping aims to strengthen communication among rangers, develop their leadership and social skills, and reinforce values of teamwork and community service. It also promotes environmental awareness and aligns scouting activities with sustainability priorities in line with Oman Vision 2040.

The program features a range of specialized activities, including an environmental coastal adventure at Al Sawadi Beach designed to enhance awareness and connect scouting practices with sustainable coastal management. It also includes training sessions on coastal sustainability—its opportunities and challenges—delivered by specialists from the Environment Directorate of South Al Batinah. In addition, participants engage in interactive sessions to analyze community needs and take part in an innovation lab, where they design community-based initiatives focused on coastal protection and sustainability, followed by project development, presentation, and evaluation.

Dr. Sara Al Bahlani, Dean of the Rustaq College of Education, described the gathering as a “strategic platform for developing well-rounded student leadership,” emphasizing the importance of combining scouting values with innovation. Dr. Rahma Al Foori, Assistant Dean for E-Systems and Students Services, noted that the event supports.

“leadership development and environmental responsibility among students.” Afrah Al Salhi, Activity Specialist, highlighted that the gathering “moves beyond traditional activities toward impactful, sustainable initiatives.” Ibtisam Al Balushi, General Camp Leader, stated that the program presents “a modern scouting model that integrates authenticity with innovation.”

The gathering aims to strengthen a sense of belonging and teamwork among rangers, foster innovation in designing community initiatives, and encourage creative thinking to address environmental challenges. It also seeks to produce practical, implementable projects and establish student teams to further develop these initiatives, while documenting and sharing successful experiences across branches.
The event is supported by several partners, including the Directorate General of Scouts and Guides and Student Activities, and the Environment Directorate of South Al Batinah, in addition to the participation of various ranger groups and clubs, enhancing community partnership and expanding its impact.

The gathering is expected to reinforce the university’s role in community service and highlight the contribution of youth as active partners in achieving environmental sustainability through initiatives that focus on protecting coastal and marine resources and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility.
