Muscat: A specialised medical team from Khoula Hospital, in collaboration with the medical staff at Suwaiq Hospital, successfully performed an urgent and complex surgical procedure on a patient who sustained severe injuries in a traffic accident. The surgery lasted three hours.
The patient was transferred to the emergency department at Suwaiq Hospital after being struck by a vehicle. He immediately underwent medical assessments and necessary diagnostic examinations using CT and MRI scans, which revealed multiple fractures in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae at four levels, accompanied by severe nerve compression within the spinal canal, resulting in loss of movement in his lower limbs.
The surgery involved widening the spinal canal and fixing the multi-level fractures in the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae using medical screws. The aim was to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves and restore spinal stability. The operation lasted several hours and was successful.
The patient has begun showing positive signs of improvement post-surgery and is currently undergoing medical follow-up and rehabilitation under the supervision of the medical team.
This achievement is an important step in the development of specialised health services at Suwaiq Hospital, and embodies the level of integration between health institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, and enhances efforts to localize advanced medical services and enable referral and local hospitals to provide quality health care to citizens and residents.
