Muscat: Muscat Municipality continues to implement road paving, maintenance and rehabilitation projects across the various wilayats of Muscat Governorate. Since the beginning of the current year, approximately 95 kilometres of internal roads have been completed as part of its efforts to keep pace with urban expansion and population growth, enhance the efficiency of the road network, strengthen traffic flow and road safety.
The lengths of roads accomplished since the beginning of the current year are distributed as follows: 27 kilometres in the Wilayat of Bausher, 22 kilometres in Al Amerat, 20 kilometres in the Wilayat of Seeb, 17 kilometres in Quriyat, and 9 kilometres in the Wilayat of Muscat. These works have been carried out through the Municipality’s own efforts; in addition to works undertaken as part of the “Supply and Asphalt Paving in Muscat Governorate” project.
As of the middle of the current year, the total length of asphalt roads in Muscat Governorate has reached approximately 5,972 kilometres, comprising 584 kilometres of main roads and 5,388 kilometres of secondary and internal roads. The Municipality continues to carry out preventive maintenance works to preserve the efficiency of these roads, alongside paving unpaved roads in residential neighbourhoods in line with urban expansion across the Governorate’s wilayats.
As part of the road projects currently under implementation, Muscat Municipality continues to implement the two projects for the Design and Construction of Internal Roads in Al Amerat – A and B, which include the paving of 26 kilometres of internal roads, of which 14 kilometres have been accomplished to date. The two projects cover Al Nahda City in Phases 1, 5, 6 and 7, the Fourth and Eighth Al Amerat Heights, and the areas of Jahlout, Saiya and Khawrat.
With regard to road maintenance and rehabilitation, Muscat Municipality has carried out maintenance works covering more than 70,000 square metres since the beginning of the current year, under the two projects “Road Maintenance in Seeb, Bawshar, Mutrah and Muscat” and “Road Maintenance in Al Amerat and Quriyat.”
The maintenance works were distributed as follows: 22,420 square metres in Al Amerat, 16,585 square metres in Quriyat, 12,526 square metres in the Wilayat of Bawshar, 11,544 square metres in the Wilayat of Seeb, 8,820 square metres in Mutrah, and 416 square metres in the Wilayat of Muscat.
The maintenance works comprise pothole repairs; full reconstruction of roads; rehabilitation of asphalt and sub-base layers; maintenance and replacement of concrete barriers, pavements and side protections; removal of fallen rocks from mountain protections. As well as the construction and maintenance of concrete roads and the supply of asphalt to the Municipality’s pothole maintenance teams. They also include preventive and emergency maintenance of various road asset components.
The current year’s works build on the road network development programmes implemented by Muscat Municipality in previous years. The total length of roads achieved in 2025 reached approximately 143 kilometres, compared with 141 kilometres in 2024.
The roads completed in 2025 were distributed as follows: 64 kilometres in the Wilayat of Al Amerat, 31 kilometres in Bawshar, 31 kilometres in Seeb, 12 kilometres in Quriyat, 4 kilometres in the Wilayat of Muscat, and 1 kilometre in Mutrah.
In 2025, a total of 134 kilometres were achieved through the Municipality’s own efforts, while 9 kilometres were carried out by contractors. In comparison, in 2024, 55 kilometres were completed through the Municipality’s own efforts and 86 kilometres by contractors. This reflects the diversity of implementation approaches adopted to meet the road network needs across the Governorate’s wilayats.
Muscat Municipality determines priorities for paving internal roads based on numerous technical and service-related criteria, most notably population density, plot occupancy rates, achievement of infrastructure service connections to avoid re-excavation after paving, the age of the plan, and the presence of essential facilities such as schools, mosques and health centres.
Priorities for maintenance and rehabilitation works are also determined based on the technical condition of the road, traffic volume, safety requirements and the efficiency of rainwater drainage, while taking into account citizens’ observations and reports. This contributes to directing paving and maintenance works according to needs and priorities across the various wilayats of the Governorate.
These works form part of Muscat Municipality’s ongoing efforts to advance the road network and enhance its efficiency, support urban expansion, and connect residential neighbourhoods with facilities and services in line with the requirements of urban development in Muscat Governorate.
