MUSCAT: A perfume seller in Muttrah suffered a loss of about OMR200,000 after a massive fire broke out in his warehouse late at night, the seller said.
One person has been injured in the fire, according an official at the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance.
“Around 10pm, I closed the warehouse and my office and went to meet some friends in front of the Muttrah police station. Soon, somebody alerted me that smoke was emerging from my warehouse. We ran to the spot and managed to retrieve some important documents and money from the locker,” Mazrook Keethadath, the shop manager and a resident of Oman for the last 25 years, told the Times of Oman.
“The perfume bottles, which are inflammable, started exploding and we couldn’t enter the warehouse. It was quite risky to retrieve some important documents, such as passports and other papers,” Keethadath, who has been running the perfume shop in Muttrah for the last 15 years, said.
Keethadath had bought the warehouse some six years ago to stock his products.
The same building also had some residential flats and those staying there were evacuated by a fire and rescue team.
“We lost only a few items, such as an air conditioner and all. No big loss. However, till the building is refurbished we have to find another accommodation,” the residents said.
“At least a dozen fire engines and firemen reached the spot to douse the fire. The fire brigades continued their fight to contain the fire till almost 5 am,” the residents added.
