ROHM announces an evening with American Jazz singer Al Jarreau

Muscat: Jazz is an eclectic music genre that arose in New Orleans, the ‘Deep South’ of the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, linking popular African American and European American musical traditions, such as folk and hillbilly music, the blues, ‘swing’ and ragtime.
A hallmark of jazz is improvisation; and, as jazz spread around the world, musicians adapted the genre to suit local culture. UNESCO has recognised jazz as one of the world’s most popular music genres by declaring April 30 as International Jazz Day.
The Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) had accordingly scheduled a performance by famous American jazz singer, Natalie Cole, in April, but, tragically, her early death intervened.
The search for a replacement has now come to fruition and ROHM announced that Grammy Award-winning American Jazz singer and song stylist, Al Jarreau has been engaged to perform on April 24 at 7.30 pm to mark the International Jazz Day.
With authentic roots in Gospel and Afro-American music, Jarreau is only the second artist—Michael Jackson was the first—to win Grammy Awards in three domains—jazz, pop and the rhythm and blues categories. Focused on recording and global touring, Al Jarreau’s career spans over five decades.
The Jarreau concert promises to be a night to remember, not only for jazz fans, but for all those who love the best of popular American singing. Former New York Times music critic, Dan Heckman, places Jarreau with all-time great American singers, such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby, because of his natural charisma and the quality of his voice. “At times, I’ve heard Al Jarreau sing with the dark baritone timbre of Sinatra, the snappy rhythmic articulation of Cole, the cool balladry of Crosby...”
