MUSCAT: Ram V. captured the Veterans Singles title at the Annual Tennis Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club Oman.
In a closely contested and thrilling final, Ram defeated K. K. Girish 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.
One would easily have taken the match for a Men’s Singles final due to the intensity, energy and pace at which the final was contested.
Fortunes fluctuated and breaks were exchanged as Ram and Girish battled it out for top honours. Scores went neck-and-neck until 5-games-all when Girish broke to take the crucial 6-5 lead.
Girish was serving for the first set but squandered set point as Ram bounced back to force the tie-breaker which was also closely contested before Ram prevailed 8-6.
The intense battle continued in the second set too. Ram took an early 3-0 lead before Girish rallied to level.
Ram played some brilliant backhand down the line passes and held for 5-3. Girish hung in bravely and saved the match at five all. Ram broke Girish for the crucial lead and served out the match to claim the Veterans’ Singles crown. Ram is in line for a double as he will feature in the Men’s Doubles final too.
