Muscat: Tornadoes hit United States' state of Alabama's Lee County leaving over 20 people dead, authorities have confirmed.
County Sheriff Jay Jones said, "The death toll is at 22 right now. Unfortunately, I feel like that number may rise yet again."
State Governor Kay Ivey extended a state of emergency which was originally issued on February 23, 2019.
Ivey said, "Our hearts go out to those who lost their lives in the storms that hit Lee County today. Praying for their families & everyone whose homes or businesses were affected. Officials from Alabama Emergency Management Agency & other agencies are quickly working to provide assistance.
"There is still a possibility of more severe weather this evening; so, please stay vigilant as it passes through the state."
