Muscat: Road accident deaths in the Sultanate have dropped by 48 per cent since 2012, according to a tweet by Royal Oman Police (ROP).
In 2015, the number of deaths related to road accident in 2015 was 675, while in 2014 it was 816. In 2013, it was 913 and in 2012 it was 1,139.
Recently, the ROP has implemented stringent measures to hold on the traffic violators who risk their lives and others too.
During the first week of April, the ROP uploaded a statement on its official twitter handle saying that drivers who fail to stop at a red light risk a jail sentence of up to a year and a fine of up to OMR500, or one of these punishments.
The ROP also issued a warning against use of phone while driving. According to ROP, using a phone while driving poses a greater danger than being under the influence of alcohol, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said in a statement.
“Studies indicate that the probability of an accident happening is greater with a driver, who uses a phone while driving, than with someone under the influence of alcohol,” the ROP said.
