British PM loses majority in Commons as MP Lee switches sides

London: In a massive setback for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Tory MP Philip Lee switched sides and joined the Liberal Democrats on Tuesday, ahead of a showdown over Brexit.

This means that Johnson no longer has a majority in the House of Commons. Lee crossed the floor of the house and took a seat in the opposition benches, while the Prime Minister was talking about the G7 meet.

Lee, the MP for Bracknell, shared a resignation letter on Twitter and wrote in his Tweet, "After a great deal of thought, I have reached the conclusion that it is no longer possible to serve my constitutents' and country's best interests as a Conservative Member of Parliament."

In his letter addressed to Johnson, Lee wrote, "Sadly the Brexit process has helped to transform this once great party in to something more akin to a narrow faction, where an individual's 'conservatism' is measured by how recklessly one wishes to leave the European Union."

He also said in the letter, "This is not personal... I believe the Liberal Democrats are best placed to build the unifying and inspiring political force needed to heal our divisions, unleash our talents, equip us to take the opportunities and overcome the challenges that we face as a society- and leave our country and our world in a better place for the next generations."
