National Competitiveness Committee holds its first meeting in Oman

Muscat: The National Competitiveness Committee today held its first meeting this year at the Ministry of Economy HQs under the chairmanship of H.E Dr. Said bin Mohammed Al Saqri, Minister of Economy in the presence of their excellence members of the committee.

The meeting is the first for the National Competitiveness Committee after its formation last October. This committee mandate is to supervise efforts aimed at raising the competitiveness of the Sultanate in the international indicator system. It also proposes the necessary policies and laws to improve the Sultanate’s competitiveness internally, and collaborate with other concerned parties to achieve this aim. The Committee will focus on the international indicators included in Oman Vision 2040 to assess performance in the next stage.

The meeting discussed a number of topics on the agenda, including the latest developments in international reports and indicators that the National Competitiveness Office is monitoring, such as the Global Competitiveness Report, and the recent Corruption Perceptions Report at which Oman made some notches.

The meeting also discussed various means to raise the Sultanate’s competitiveness internally and externally, and the efforts made by the National Competitiveness Office in this regard. The Office maintains coordination with the various authorities in the Sultanate and abroad to enhance the Sultanate's position and raise its level of competitiveness in international development indicators.

Some international reports and indicators issued by renowned global institutions such as the World Bank, Transparency International and the World Economic Forum have remarkable weight among international decision-makers and influencers. It is therefore very natural for countries to strive and exert efforts to enhance their ranking in these indicators considering the positive economic effects of such efforts. The indicators are also used as a benchmarking tool for applying international best practices in various fields.
